These are considered as one of the greatest Romanesque architectural monuments in Europe and are part of a single Benedictine settlement. Important note: the Church can be reached only on foot walking for about 1 hour through a mountain path (300 m difference in height). The first documents are from the 7th –8th century and, according to the tradition, its foundation dates back to the Lombard age. The church contains frescoes and sculptures from the 11th and 12th century as well as the most important fresco about the Apocalypse of the Italian Romanesque art: Good wins over Evil with the archangel Michael defeating the drake.
