Colico: Description
The city of Colico is the last on the eastern branch of the lake and it is surrounded by majestic scenery of the mountains around it. It is a well known tourist resort since it is situated in the middle of the roads coming from Lecco, Chiavenna, Sondrio and close to the mountain passes connecting Italy to Switzerland and Austria. And for this same reason Colico was a strategic point for trades between north and south. However, the city became finally important after the opening of the Stelvio, Maloja and Splugen passes.
This area has 3 main beaches, two of them are in Colico, the other on the bay of Laghetto di Piona. Tourists have the opportunity here to choose nautical sports such as sailing, surf school and rentals. Nautical centre of boats, tennis centre, horse riding, minigolf, and mountain biking. Railway station with connections to Lecco and Milan.
From Colico there is the opportunity of many excursions in mountain with or without tourist guide. The landscape that is encountered among the mountains is beautiful. Conquered by the Spaniards in 1500’s Colico still preserves military forts that attracts many tourists. The 2 forts erected in the north of Colico are walkable distance from the centre. Recommended is a walk on the lake-front with its square and its fountain illuminated at night. Numerous cafés, restaurants pubs, which offer typical kitchen and good wine. The “CROTTI" are small restaurants built in the caves of the mountain in the fractions of Curcio and Laghetto. Also at night you can enjoy discos, nightclubs and pubs. For families there are open theatres in Colico, which offer cabaret, music and variety shows in the summer.
